Volunteering

We would like to thank The Rotary Club or Toronto for their support in the development of the Volunteer directory.

Volunteering is the most fundamental act of citizenship and philanthropy in our society. It is offering time, energy and skills of one's own free will. It is an extension of being a good neighbour, transforming a collection of houses into a community, as people become involved in the improvement of their surroundings and choose to help others. By caring and contributing to change, volunteers decrease suffering and disparity, while they gain skills, self-esteem and change their lives. People work to improve the lives of their neighbours and, in return, enhance their own.

Every day, thousands of people voluntarily give their time and talent to thousands of organizations across Canada. They give their time freely and with no expectation of monetary reward. Their hours of service ensure that many activities are accomplished and many people are helped. They build houses for the homeless, care for the elderly, and provide counseling and support services. They are youth group leaders, program coordinators, coaches and fundraisers. They represent every walk of life - professional, homemaker, student, retiree - as well as every age and cultural group.

Volunteers are agents of positive change, creatively responding to challenges and opportunities with courage and determination for the betterment of our communities. Strong community bonds can be formed through things like volunteering and donating money to groups and organisations in the community. Such networks may involve people who do not normally associate with one another, and in this way help to form bridging relationships between these community members.

Volunteers and volunteer organizations "help build stronger and safer communities. And, they contribute to the cultural richness and diversity" of the surrounding community.

Volunteers are people from all walks of life, all ages and stages. What they have in common is the desire to make a difference in their community – and in their own life – by giving of their time and expertise.

TSC volunteers are the helping hands for our organization. Volunteer efforts ensure that the quality of life is enhanced for individuals and the community. As a volunteer, you will develop new and valuable skills, meet new people, contribute to the community, gain field experience and build positive self-esteem.
